Italian
During the early twentieth century, Italian immigrants established a thriving community in southeast Seattle, where they built businesses, raised families, and preserved the religious and cultural traditions of their homeland. Centered in the neighborhood known as Garlic Gulch, this community became an important hub of Italian life in the Pacific Northwest, supported by strong ties of faith, education, and mutual aid. In 1903, Mother Cabrini arrived in Seattle to minister to the growing Italian immigrant community there. She found that "some of them have not seen a church for over 20, 30, 40, and 50 years." She immediately set about remedying the situation by founding Mount Carmel Mission on Beacon Hill, followed by a school which later developed into Our Lady of Mount Virgin school and parish. Although urban development eventually transformed the neighborhood and dispersed many residents, the legacy of Seattle's Italian immigrant families remains an enduring part of the city's history.
