During the Jubilee Year 2025, Pope Francis is calling on all the faithful to become Pilgrims of Hope. The Jubilee Year begins when Pope Francis opens the Holy Doors at St. Peter’s Basilica on December 24, 2024. The doors will remain open until the end of the Jubilee Year on January 6, 2026. During the Jubilee, millions of pilgrims are expected to travel to Rome to walk through the Holy Doors and participate in Jubilee events.

Those unable to travel to Rome can participate in the Jubilee locally by making a pilgrimage to St. James Cathedral in Seattle or to one of the other designated pilgrimage sites.

What is a Jubilee Year?

A Jubilee is a special year of prayer. Jubilees are times for forgiveness, reconciliation, and pilgrimage and are a part of the Catholic tradition. Jubilees ordinarily take place every twenty-five years.

The theme of Jubilee 2025 is Pilgrims of Hope, and the faithful are encouraged to participate, either by going on pilgrimage to Rome or in your local archdiocese. Scroll down to find the five local pilgrimage sites in the Archdiocese of Seattle.

Father in heaven,
may the faith you have gifted us in
your son Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity
kindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us, the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us
into diligent cultivators of the evangelical seeds
that make humanity and the cosmos rise
unto the confident expectation
of the new heavens and the new earth,
when with the powers of Evil overcome,
your glory shall be manifested eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
the yearning for heavenly treasures
and pour over all the earth
the joy and peace
of our Redeemer.

You can make a Jubilee pilgrimage closer to home by visiting St. James Cathedral in Seattle or one of the other designated pilgrimage places throughout the archdiocese. In each location, you will find a self-guided pilgrimage brochure including special prayers for the Jubilee.

Why did Pope Francis declare the Jubilee Year?

Pope Francis officially proclaimed the Jubilee Year 2025 on Thursday, May 9, 2024, on the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, with the public reading and delivery of Spes Non Confundit, the Bull of Indicition in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.

The main theme of the Jubilee Year is hope. Below are excerpts from a Vatican News article which provides some background about the theme:

"Expressing his desire that the Jubilee might be “an opportunity for us to be renewed in hope, Pope Francis recalled that pilgrimage is “a fundamental event of every Jubilee event,” traditionally associated with the human quest for the meaning of life. The artistic masterpieces and the beauty of creation we see on our journey inspire us to praise and thank God for His wondrous works.

In particular, he invited all the particular churches throughout the world to prepare priests and the faithful for Sacramental Confession, which should be readily available throughout the year.

The Holy Father concludes the Bull with a final note of hope, praying that “the coming Jubilee will be a Holy Year marked by the hope that does not fade, our hope in God”; and that it might help us recover “the confident trust we require in the Church and in society, in our interpersonal relationships, in international relations, and in our task of promoting the dignity of all persons and respect for God’s gift of creation.”

How do you obtain Jubilee Year Indulgence?

The faithful can obtain the Jubilee indulgence if, having celebrated the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, they devoutly visit any Jubilee site (in Rome or in your local diocese) and there, for a suitable period of time, engage in Eucharistic adoration and meditation, concluding with the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form, and invocations to Mary, the Mother of God.
