St Kateri Tekakwitha Feast Day
Everyone is welcome to join St Joachim Lummi Reservation with Archbishop Etienne to the annual St Kateri Tekakwitha Feast Day Celebration. St Kateri Tekakwitha was the first Indigenous person of North America to be canonized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church and is revered as a patron saint of ecology.
In 2006, 6-year-old Jake Finkbonner’s parents and doctors expected his death when strep A bacteria started attacking his face after he received a cut on his lip during a basketball game. Sister Kateri Mitchell came to the hospital and prayed for Jake as she placed a relic of the Blessed Kateri on his leg. The next morning, doctors were stunned to tell his family that the flesh-eating bacteria had stopped. They reconstructed his face, and Jake, a Lummi descendent and St Joachim parishioner survived. Five years late, the Catholic Church declared his healing the second miracle needed to elevate Blessed Kateri to sainthood.
Mass will start at 5:00 pm followed by a potluck. Everybody is encouraged to bring their favorite dish to share.
