Advent Readings and Carols
This year’s Readings and Carols features all of our Youth Music ensembles: Fratres Young Men’s Ensemble, Jubilate! Young Women’s Ensemble, Schola Cantorum, and Seraphim Choir, singing songs from around the world that lend a global voice to our Advent anticipation and Christmas joy:
- A la nanita nana (traditional Spanish carol; arr. Folstrom)
- Betelehemu (Nigerian Christmas carol; arr. Beck)
- Do hory, do lesi, valasi (Slovakian carol)
- Echo Carol (Wilby)
- Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming (Praetorius)
- Riu, riu, chiu (Castillian villancico, 16th Cent.)
- The seven joys of Mary (English traditional; arr. Iliff)
- Still, still, still (traditional German carol)
Youth readers offer traditional readings from Holy Scripture heralding Christ’s birth, and congregational carols are sung in the soft glow of candlelight. No tickets or reservations are required for this liturgy – all are welcome!
The Cathedral will not close at the usual 6pm weekday time, and will remain open before the liturgy.
The Cabrini Garage will be open for free Cathedral parking for this liturgy.
To receive free parking, you must take a ticket from the machine when you enter the garage, and write “St. James Cathedral” on it before you hand it to the attendant upon exiting the garage.
